Hi! I am Cynthia S. Vander Ark, therapist, educator and children’s book writer.

I live in Central Pennsylvania with my tender and anchoring husband of 32 years. I have two grace-filled and exquisite daughters who live too far away! I  have a very smart dog, Finley, and a very anxious and talkative cat, Beans. (She looks like a pot of BEANS!) I counsel adults part time and am getting certified to do horse therapy. I have so many things I like to do! Don’t you? I LOVE dancing, although I’m terrible at it! I am a water girl…swimming, body surfing, floating, kayaking…anything that gets me close to a body of water. I garden, shovel snow, (yes, I actually enjoy it), hike, read lots of books, write and travel. What about you? What do you love to do?

A very long time ago, I was an Education major with a minor in Reading at the University of Texas in Austin. My favorite thing about being an education major was reading all those children’s books. My mom and dad did not read to me, so a whole fantastic and beautiful world opened up when I started reading children’s books. All that magic and the comfort and oh, the company! It was like I had been reunited with long lost friends I didn’t know I had. Books attuned to me and helped me understand how I was feeling and who I had been as a child.

Now I write so that children who need company won’t be left alone. I write for those kids who know the deeper realities of being human but do not have the words, yet. I write for the parents who are having trouble with their own words and emotions. I write to find and understand my own story and I love it! We’ll see what stories come next, but for now you will be seeing tales about life growing up on Hog’s Back Mountain.

“We write stories, not because we have answers, but because we have questions.”
